I decided to mix things up a bit and kick off our preschool summer with a desert theme. No, not desserts, (wouldn’t that be tasty), but deserts, as in the hot, dry, sandy environment.
DESERT RICE CRAFT
Students created a sensory cactus craft by adding dyed rice to a cactus made from green construction paper. They used tissue paper to make fruit for the cactus. We mounted the cacti on black paper since, oddly enough, the cactus flowers bloom at night, not during the day.
HOW TO DYE RICE
Fill a zip-up bag with 1 cup of rice and 1 teaspoon of vinegar.Scoop or pour about 1/8 teaspoon food coloring into the bag.
Zip the bag shut.
Squeeze the bag and mix the rice all around until the food coloring is well distributed.
Add more food coloring to reach the desired color.
